Creating Environments and Props
For the research of the house that the protagonist will live in, the initial idea was to bade the aesthetic of my hometown of Brixham, the architecture is old, and while there are efforts to upkeep it, the age of the building shows. i also looked at Designs that in Animation that reflect this aesthetic of building.
I created a Floor plan for the building, so that the design of the building would remain consistent throughout the entire story. As if rooms moved about or changed design, they would lose their continuity and with it the the audiences suspension of disbelief.
City Research:
Below is some photographic references i took while on my trip to Japan in 2016 as inspiration for the environment locations. i like the neon palette and also its somewhat crowded nature. It is a nice stark contrast to the previous setting, so will work well to help differentiate the places and break up the acts of the story.
Alley Way Designs
I used a technique often used by Concepts artists in the industry called photo bashing. It is the technique of taking different parts of photos and combining them, and painting over the top to create a concept. It is highly effective in creating concepts of locations. Above and below are my attempts at photos bashing, in order to get an idea of what i want the colour, and feel of the environment to feel like.
Main Street Designs
Prop design
Once i had had an idea for the locations i moved onto to designing the props for the characters to use. Due to time constrictions, i narrowed down to the most important props, that the characters use. I used real life as reference, but experimented with the details. colours and silhouette of the pieces.
